Education v Knowledge.....

It’s been an interesting month …. A handful of medico-legal cases and people enquiring about the Core Course … yet they already have a badge … well, a certificate… or even a diploma … so naturally I go ‘but why ‘?

Everybody wants a badge ….but why?

OK… it gives assurance that the course has passed standards …. But whose standards. It’s big business now being an establishment that applies its ‘seal of approval’ to your course. So the course must be good ?

Well, from the comments I receive is that the ‘information’ given is good but it doesn’t ‘train’ you for the clinical, in surgery part. Writing assignments no problem. In surgery execution, not so good.

And, I’ve even had some comments that it will help protect in a medico legal case! Uhhm how exactly? About a third of my cases are from clinicians with M.Orth, even hospital Consultants. If anything having a badge could work in the opposite direction in that you should have known better!

Any more reasons to have a badge? Well is suppose it may impress patients, a whole heap of letters after your name (I appreciate that the kettle may be calling the pot black on this) but surely having good rapport skills trumps letters after your name ?

And then I remember Seth Godin's rift. The difference between education and knowledge.

Education is from establishments … and delegates want to know what’s on the test … to pass .. to get the badge.

Knowledge is like going to the gym… no one forces you to… it’s not easy ….but you feel better at the end because you chose to go.

The M.Orth is changing … it’s already dropped the treatment of adults. It’s dropped its research component. I recall you may only have to present two cases now (I could be wrong on that point).

If you want to gain knowledge with an ever evolving course with a team that’s ‘got ur back’, even many years later, a course where parents who’ve done the course send their sons and daughters along to do the course.…a course where brothers recommend the course to their other brother's and sister's …. You know where to come #ridewithus
