Who is Hutch?

A self-proclaimed fanatic of the '3 C's' and a master in his field, find out why Hutch is on a mission to tear up the rulebook of orthodontic teaching for the greater good...

ABOUT: Welcome

Ian 'Hutch' Hutchinson

BDS FDS RCSEd MOrthEd MSc(Bris) PGA

Hutch has been there, done that, got the official t-shirt and is now re-writing the rulebook. He’s taken all the good parts and thrown away all the average bits, re-invented, developed and refined it all to give you the most unique and effective orthodontic course there is.

For those who really want to know, yes, he is a Specialist Orthodontist, he has been a Consultant in orthodontics, has owned a busy NHS practice (and still owns his own private one), has been Chairman of British Lingual Orthodontic Society and has created and run an MSc Orthodontic program (Lingual Orthodontics) for Warwick University. And, don’t forget, he is also a Faculty Member of the Spear Academy as well, just to keep him up to date in the latest Restorative trends.

On a personal level, Hutch has a simple fascination for the 3 C’s; cake, coffee and cycling.

'Outside the box' teaching

Traditional orthodontic training was held in the grasp of those in the ‘Ivory Towers’. Nowadays, it is commonplace that most Orthodontic training is actually just teaching you how to choose a particular company’s product. This leaves you with very narrow treatment ‘formulas’ and doesn't give you the breadth of knowledge to be able to handle any problem that walks into your surgery. Nor, be able to use a wide variety of appliances that are best suited for the individual patient.

What I’ve learnt in over thirty years in the industry is that great orthodontic training needs to provide the dentists with the mechanical and technological principles they need to be able to solve any problem even if it doesn't fit within one of these very tight, product/system protocols. In addition, it’s also about giving you the extra pieces of information or insights you need to build and blend a tailored approach that is best for the patient, rather than how to make the patient fit with a particular product.

“Ultimately It's about giving clinicians real freedom gained from genuine expertise, that is broad and wide, so that they themselves can solve complicated problems and not just follow a formula from the manufacture.”
