Learning from the best

Moving away from an enemy force in a controlled way. It's a fundamental military skill.

The theory is simple - it takes five minutes to learn sitting at a table moving counters around. Watch the shootout from the movie Heat and you've pretty much got it.

Easy in theory, but hard to execute for real. Out on the ground under immense stress and pressure that simple drill becomes a massive challenge.

You have to do it over and over again, training it day in day out until your reactions become instinct. Getting to that point takes three phases:

  1.    Understand the theory.

  2.    Practice it in a low pressure environment.

  3.    Stress test it with unpredictable and complex scenarios.

Mindset is no different. Books, podcasts and videos will not build confidence and resilience.

'Focus on what you can control and stop worrying about the rest'- simple in theory.

But, can you hold that mindset when the waiting room is filling up, the agency nurse is struggling, reception want to add in some ‘extras’ ….can you feel the pressure ?

Staying in control - that's the discipline. If it's possible in combat then it's possible in the surgery.

Thats why we we practice practice practice

Treat planning….

Mid treatment re assessments….

Wire bending……

and watch one of the greats … Heat

failing that... not as exciting...
